First, you will want to make a backup of your important
data in case of any problems. Use
some type of removable media such as zip disks, CDRW, or tape backup.
This will ensure your data is safe in case you accidentally format the
wrong drive or something else disastrous happens.
Double check your backup and make sure it has the data that you put on
it. Usually tape drives have a
verification process that you can utilize to make sure your backup integrity is
good. Once you are sure you have a good backup, unpack your new
hard drive. There are a few jumpers
in back by the power connector that signify the master and slave setting for the
drive. We will be setting our new
drive to master, and the old drive that has our data will need to be set to
slave. Follow the manufacturer’s
instructions for setting the master slave jumpers on the drives. Now connect the 40-pin IDE ribbon cable.
One ribbon connection is on the motherboard, and the other two ribbon
connections will go to the hard disk drives.
Also make sure the 4-pin power connection is supplied to each drive. Now that we have everything plugged in, load the Data
Lifeguard disk into your floppy drive and turn on your computer.
When your computer powers up it should start booting from the floppy disk
and loading the Data Lifeguard Tools application. If not you may need to set the
boot priority in the bios setup. When the blue menu screen appears, choose the EZ-Install
option. This option will partition and format your new disk drive, and copy your
data from your old drive to your new drive. You will need to agree to the
License Agreement by pressing the enter key. Then the application will gather
information from your system and ask if you installing Windows XP.
If the old drive has Windows XP choose yes.
If not, choose no to continue. At the Main Menu screen, you should notice the Identified
Drives at the bottom of the screen. You
should see your new disk drive first and your old drive should be listed beneath
it. Choose “Fully Automatic Install” from the menu.
Next you will select the drive to partition and format.
Choose Disk Drive 1: which should be your new disk drive.
It should be larger than the old disk drive.
The System will scan the drive, partition, then ask you for a format
option. Most everyone will use the
FAT32 option unless you are trying to do this on a server. Now you can choose the drive that has your data on it. Choose Drive 2: to continue. Lifeguard tools will now copy the data from your old drive
to the new drive. When the process
is complete you can reboot the unit and start using it again. If you don’t need the extra “slave” drive anymore,
remove the drive, and set the jumper to stand alone on your new drive.
Replace the cables and case cover and boot the computer.
It should boot on the same operating system that you started with, and
all your data will be intact. Hopefully this will help you install a new disk drive and retain all of your important applications and data. If you choose to leave your old drive in the system, you can use it as a backup drive, or format it and just use it to store games and music!
